"Pi 4 is ready for 4K video". This is the key part. "Ready" is different to "can".
Just as the earlier pi's could not play HD 1080 till players had the fancy programing within the Video Player to hand processing to the GPU.

The Pi4 is the same. It will only be dedicated players that *might* play 4k ok.

But there is progress, and the Pi4 can play 1080p YouTube videos. Which is pretty impressive and does mean the pi4 is a significant step up.
As for 4k? The chinese SoC boards will likely fill that market.

This thing is particularly good for robotics projects. You forgot to mention the Jetson nano and this things lack of AI optimized hardware. I don't blame you for being a fanboy... I would rather have this over a Mac mini.

You both probably right. My Intel Stick M3 was just that, It can playback 4k30hz as a local file, but would have difficulties playing the same over streaming like YouTube.

I think the 4k60 claim is for videos stored directly on the device (not streaming).

I just don't like the Micro HDMI fact that its structurally not long lasting if u move the device around alot the connections tend to break

Its hard to push 4K60 with 10bit and 4:4:4 Chroma but normal HDR 10 is something your display and your software needs to support. Hardware does theoretically.

If it supports 4K, it means it has enough framebuffer to support 1080 ultrawide like 2560x1080 in OpenGL. I hope they roll-out Vulkan for Pi4 & with Wayland becoming stable by then, we should have some decent desktop experience.

Sadly but no, there is video with proof that raspberry pi 4 cant handle with 4k 30fps, there are isuues with lags and buffering or just dont play at all... :(

IMPORTANT SIDE NOTE: According to Linus Tech Tips, and personal experience confirmed with the micro HDMI are very flimsy and easily can or will break.

It’s a shame they should have made it as full size HDMI port. Good luck not breaking them. I DONT RECOMMEND IF YOU WILL BE USING FOR THAT REASON.

They should have made these to HDMI Mini, the space is there, maybe we can mod the pie 🤔

Plex client maybe... It's far too weak for video transcoding (Plex has very limited support for hardware accelerated transcoding) to be used as a Plex server

Aditya Mishra the new Odroid H2 is quite power yet still inexpensive compared to other barebone single unit computers. Check that out. The performance is almost better or equal to the N5000 laptop cpu processor, now that’s nice and fast enough for your needs. It’s capable of 4K 60hz video playback. Plus, big bonus is you can upgrade up to 32GB of RAM!!
